Beginning on Thursday July 12, and lasting for about three weeks, the NYCDOT Division of Bridge’s contractors will conduct ground penetrating radar survey work along the Brooklyn Heights Promenade in preparation for the future rehabilitation of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, Atlantic Avenue to Sands Street. This weather dependent operation will help inform the project team of existing conditions underground and will take place between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. from Monday to Friday.

The promenade will remain open at all times.

Throughout the duration of this work, promenade users can expect to see a device similar to the one in the attached notice. All operators of the device will wear safety vests.

This work is being conducted under a permit issued by and in close coordination with the Department of Parks and Recreation. Any damaged vegetation will be replaced.

From Council Member Levin: After years of BHA advocacy, the city finally acknowledged Love Lane and College Place are city streets, so they are repaving them after years of neglect! The repaving schedule has changed slightly since we published our notice a few days ago, but we have not received an update — be sure to check signs in the street when you park your car!

Assemblymember Jo Anne Simon is hosting her 4th Annual Senior Resource Fair. The fair is co-sponsored by Senator Velmanette Montgomery, Senator Brian Kavanagh, Council Member Stephen Levin, and Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams. Over 60 groups will be available to provide senior citizens with information on legal services, health care, government and community resources, and more. A Town Hall will be held on health and wellness as you age.

The MTA is slated to wrap up its roughly yearlong reconstruction of the 2 and 3 lines’ Clark Street tunnel next week, with weekend and weeknight service to be restored between Manhattan and Brooklyn by June 25.

The project involved a variety of electrical, mechanical and structural reconstruction in order to replace and protect equipment that was badly damaged during superstorm Sandy in 2012. More than half a million gallons of corrosive salt water flooded the 1.2-mile-long tunnel during the Oct. 29 storm, shutting down subway service for five days.

“They [riders] are getting a better system,” Sharda Persaud, MTA Transit’s resident engineer for the project, said during a tour of the work Saturday. “And if we do have another Sandy, it shouldn’t affect service as much.” Read full story here – AM New York

President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and senior advisor Jared Kushner unloaded his stakes in two yuge Brooklyn developments — the old Watchtower complex in Brooklyn Heights, which is being transformed in to a high-end office complex, and a ground-up luxury tower in nearby Dumbo — according to a rep for the firm that bought him out.

“We confirm that Kushner Companies and its affiliates have divested all of their interests in the projects located at 25-30 Columbia Heights and 85-95 Jay Street in Brooklyn last month,” said Bill Mendel, a rep for CIM Group, which together with Kushner’s family firm and developer Livwrk purchased both properties from the Jehovah’s Witnesses in 2016. Read full article here.

Patrol Borough Brooklyn North will be rolling out its new literacy initiative on Monday June 25, 2018 as where each precinct will dedicate a small area of the precinct as a free children’s library. This library will be made available for any child that wants to read or keep these books as a way of promoting reading and making books easily accessible.The 84th Precinct is in need of used children’s books for this library ASAP , so anyone that has books that would like to donate it would be very much appreciated. The City Planning Commission is holding a public hearing on Wednesday, June 13th, beginning at 10 AM, in the lower concourse hearing room of 120 Broadway in Manhattan on the proposed rezoning for the wildly out-of-scale 80 Flatbush Avenue Project.
If approved through the City’s land use process (ULURP), these actions would triple the site’s allowable density. The completed project would have towers of 38- and 74-stories, and include 900 apartment units (200 affordable), 200,000 square feet of office space, a new 350-seat elementary school, a rebuilt Khalil Gabran International High School, retail space and community space.
Community Board 2 voted overwhelmingly against the project in early May. While the BHA recognizes that the project has beneficial elements, it has publicly opposed the project due to the unacceptable price being paid for these benefits: its enormous scale, the lack of sensible transition to the low-rise neighborhood to the south, the environmental impacts on historic Boerum Hill and Fort Greene, and the City’s misguided policy of “buying” school capacity by giving developer’s enormous zoning bonuses.
Persons wishing to attend and testify at Wednesday’s hearing are limited to 3 minutes and must sign up when entering the hearing room.
This project will set a dangerous precedent for the Flatbush Corridor. Tell the Planning Commission to go back to the drawing board!
