Delicious Debate!!

For the first presidential debate, we tested the display of a live broadcast on our big screen with great success! Picture and sound was marvelous! Although we had a modest turnout, the small but energetic group were treated to yummy pastries, delectable danishes, bagels & spreads and drinks courtesy of the CPN Community Fund. We really had a good time! Thanks to Henry Fleary and helpers (especially our IT specialist, Rob!) So would you be interested in movie nights? A Super Bowl Party? Oscars Party? Brooklyn Heights Temporary Library is a hit!

Grab your library card and check this out!

The Brooklyn Public Library opened its temporary Brooklyn Heights branch on Wednesday morning, impressing early visitors who say they’d much rather peruse the shelves in the bright, cool interim space than the drab old branch, where they had to endure a broken air-conditioning system.

MORE Brooklyn Bridge Construction is in our future!!

brooklyn-bridge-expansion-concept

An expansion of the Brooklyn Bridge walking and biking path could get underway by 2019 if it’s folded into a rehab project that’s already in the pipeline, DOT Commissioner Polly Trottenberg said this afternoon.

The path is as narrow as 10 feet at pinch points and cannot comfortably accommodate the thousands of people who use it each day.

For now, the next step is a $370,000 feasibility study slated to wrap up in seven months. DOT has already conducted a preliminary assessment of conditions on the bridge path and posted a working concept for the expansion.

The idea is to widen the pathway by building on top of the steel girders that run over the bridge’s main roadways. Most of the wooden deck for walking and biking is four feet below the girders, so the expansions would be at a higher grade than the current path. Trottenberg said DOT will also explore expanding the concrete approaches to the wooden deck on both the Brooklyn and Manhattan sides.

CAN IT!

Earlier this year and after repeated lobbying by the CPN Board, the City placed a garbage receptacle at the corner of Middagh and Cadman Plaza West. Unfortunately they did not do a good job of picking up the trash and garbage overflowed onto the streets daily. We told them either pick up the trash daily or remove the receptacle. So they removed it. Now it’s back and it appears that the trash is being picked up daily. Thanks to our elected officials for their help with this. Keep your fingers crossed that things stay clean!

Feds investigating Mayor de Blasio’s involvement in sale of Long Island College Hospital

U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara is looking into Mayor de Blasio’s involvement in the sale of Long Island College Hospital in Brooklyn, the Daily News has learned.

Bharara’s office recently issued a subpoena to the State University of New York, which had owned the hospital, seeking all communications between the university system and City Hall regarding the sale of LICH dating to Jan. 2, 2014, when de Blasio took office, said two sources familiar with the matter.

One source close to SUNY confirmed the subpoena and said “the clear target seems to be de Blasio.” But the specifics of what Bharara is looking into were unclear.
