Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 6 Planned Towers Remain Stuck in Court

LOWER MANHATTAN — The long battle over the controversial construction of two residential towers inside Brooklyn Bridge Park at Pier 6 may soon be resolved by a private mediator. Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Lucy Billings on Tuesday urged the Brooklyn Heights Association — which filed a lawsuit in July against the 28-story and 14-story towers— and the Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation, the nonprofit chartered by the city to oversee the park, to resolve their dispute through mediation. She also, however, gave them the option to return to court next Wednesday if they wanted to “spend the resources to argue [in court] while in mediation.” Many locals in Brooklyn Heights and Cobble Hill have long opposed the construction of residential development in the park, but under the park’s “general project plan,” issued in 2006, it was required to be financially self-sustaining — meaning that it would generate its own revenue to cover operating and maintenance costs.

Cops evacuate sections of Brooklyn Bridge Park on Tuesday due to large, disorderly crowds

Level 1 Mobilization called – By Mary Frost – Brooklyn Daily Eagle

An extremely large, disorderly crowd at Pier 2 in Brooklyn Bridge Park prompted police to call a Level 1 Mobilization and evacuate sections of the park shortly before 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

Thousands of park-goers streamed out of the park along the Joralemon Street and Old Fulton Street exits, or headed along Furman Street to Atlantic Avenue. Traffic in Downtown Brooklyn was jammed as emergency vehicles tried to get to the park.

Unprecedented! Developer seeks super tall tower for Boerum Hill block

Luxury developers revealed this week a plan to construct towers of 74 and 38 stories on the eastern edge of very low-rise Boerum Hill — a proposal of unprecedented density that neighbors will likely fight. “It’s a massive project,” said Howard Kolins, president of the Boerum Hill Association. “Virtually nothing [in the proposal] is a benefit for people living there. You have to brace yourself for a large high rise that you’d rather not be there.” Alloy Development — which bought up the existing buildings on the block bounded by Third Avenue, Flatbush Avenue Extension, and State Street, but was cagey on the details last year— disagreed, citing 200 units of below-market-rate housing in the 900-unit mixed-use complex, which will also feature retail and two new schools — one a 350-student elementary facility and another a new building for the Khalil Gibran International Academy, which will be able to expand from 160 to 350 students.
