NYC DOT Seeks Public Comments, Suggestions Concerning BQE Repairs

We noted earlier that the New York State Legislature, which has an unfortunate stranglehold on many matters affecting New York City alone, in its recent session failed to pass the legislation required to expedite the urgently needed work to repair the cantilevered portion of the Brooklyn Queens Expressway that runs below Brooklyn Heights and the Promenade. We now have word, thanks to the Brooklyn Heights Association, that the New York City Department of Transportation has invited members of the public to comment or offer suggestions concerning the project during the approximately eighteen months that DOT will undertake a public planning process for the BQE repairs. Comments, questions, or suggestions may be sent to [email protected] or by phone to 212-839-6304.

Can it be true? The Brooklyn Bridge Construction Project is Coming to a Close!

The New York City Department of Transportation, Division of Bridges is happy to announce that the milling and paving work on Brooklyn Bridge has been completed with the exception of installation of final pavement markings on the Brooklyn bound lanes. The work of installing permanent pavement markings is expected to take a few hours and will be completed some time this week with the use of short term rolling closure of the lanes.

NYCDOT would like to thank the public for their patience and understanding.

BHA Letter to Board Urges Action!

(Our State Senator is Velmanette Montgomery at 718-643-6140.)

Hello All,

I am grateful to each of you for signing onto the Brooklyn Heights Association’s letter to Governor Cuomo, Majority Leader Flanagan and Speaker Heastie urging the NYS Legislature to pass legislation authorizing the City’s use of design build to rehabilitate the Brooklyn Queens Expressway. Please find attached a copy of the letter.

Unfortunately, the dysfunction of Albany was much in evidence during the legislative session that ended yesterday, since it failed to enact this vital legislation. While there will be another opportunity to do so, time is running short. On June 28th, NYCDOT will introduce the design team that will evaluate design options and prepare the environmental analysis for the rehabilitation project over the upcoming 18 months. At the end of this period, NYCDOT will initiate Final Design, and having design build authority will be critical in advance of this next phase.

I spoke to Senator Squadron’s office today to inquire what we could do as concerned communities. The Legislature may be called back into session in the coming days attend to the Mayor’s control of the school system, which was not renewed during the session that just ended. Squadron’s office suggested that we could urge our constituents to call their local Senator to ask them to pass design build legislation.

I again appreciate your support and hope you will continue to advocate for design build authority for NYC. If I can be helpful, please let me know.

Best wishes. Peter

CPN 50th Gala a Smashing Success!

Hallway chatter says that our Anniversary Celebration on June 10 was a “dazzling and surprising” event! We’re currently combing through hundreds of photos and will soon post photo highlights. Thanks to the hard work performed by the 50th Anniversary Committee, our Community Room was transformed into an elegant black and gold party space featuring a table  of memorabilia and a display of “The 50 Club” names of Shareholders who moved to our building in 1967. The real hit of the night was the outdoor space where our beleaguered deck was turned into a disco complete with dance floor and twinkling party lights. Thanks to a great DJ, shareholders danced with each other until we had to turn off the music and beg people to leave! Party-goers raved about the southern cuisine served by Hill Country. Also a big hit were the bartenders and waiters which came from Columbia University.

During the cocktail hour, Oscar Jonas, Community Liaison Director of Senator Velmanette Montgomery’s office presented Board President Ted Valand with a Legislative Resolution commemorating our 50th.

The only problem now is that Shareholders want an outdoor party every month! Hmmmm.
