Mayor de Blasio Announces $6 million to Upgrade Northern End of Cadman Park at Heights Town Hall.

Thanks to an invitation from Steve Levin to the CPN Board, we had a front row seat to all the action at this lively but mostly civil Town Hall Meeting held Wednesday night at St Francis College.

Acting Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez, NYS Assembly Member Jo Anne Simon, and Congress Member Nydia Velázquez also attended to show their support for the mayor as well as the neighborhoods covered in Levin’s Council District 33 (Boerum Hill, Brooklyn Heights, Brooklyn Navy Yard, Downtown Brooklyn, DUMBO, Fulton Ferry, Greenpoint, Vinegar Hill, and Williamsburg).

“This is a great opportunity for this district to have a real dialogue with our Mayor,” Levin said at the start of the meeting. “He’s done now 40 of these meetings around the city. He’s going to be reaching out to every single council district in the entire city of New York by the end of this year. What that says to me is this is a mayor who cares about communities. This is a mayor who cares about the issue on your block.”

Before the two-hour Q&A session with community members, De Blasio addressed the audience, detailing recent developments within the council district Levin represents.

Of particular interest to CPN is the announcement that $6 million has been invested to upgrade of northern end of Cadman Plaza Park. The Mayor pointed out that this park is long overdue for improvements. The last time Cadman Plaza Park received an upgrade was in the 1950s. The project will include new landscaping, new benches, and a water fountain.

CityMD Checks into Former Banana Republic Space

You won’t be able to buy any khakis or dress shirts but you can have your blood pressure checked at the new CityMD set to open in the former Banana Republic store on Montague Street. Not that we need another urgent care center with UMD Urgent Care just a block away! Kind of a bummer.  – KK

Jehovah’s Witnesses sell two prime Brooklyn Heights properties to Hawkins Way Capital

A Los Angeles-based real-estate investment firm is the buyer of two prime Watchtower residential properties located in the Brooklyn Heights Historic District.

Hawkins Way Capital has closed on the purchase of 117-125 Columbia Heights for $18 million and expects to close a deal for 97 Columbia Heights later this month, according to an announcement by Leslie J. Garfield Real Estate, the brokerage repping the buyer.

“Hawkins Way Capital’s flexibility, creative underwriting and strong backing made them the perfect fit for these unique trophy assets, which were meticulously maintained over the years by [the] Watchtower,” Matthew Lesser said in the announcement.

He and Ravi Kantha of Leslie J. Garfield Real Estate’s Lesser Kantha Team are Hawkins Way Capital’s reps in the Columbia Heights acquisitions.

The New York Post broke the news about the California firm’s property purchases before Leslie J. Garfield Real Estate released its announcement about them.

Landscaping Update

Sorry to report that some of our large bushes on the North side of the building have come down with a fungal condition which necessitates their removal. The most affected have been removed and replaced with smaller bushes which seem to do well in our environs. The remaining bushes will be removed in September at which time we’re going to add some evergreen trees to the mix.

CPN Yard Sale a Success in Spite of Hazy Hot & Humid Day

While some chose not to show up, the Yard Sale die hards set up their tables Saturday morning clustered under the shady trees in front of the building. For some, it was worth it according to the handful of sellers we spoke to who said sales were good. There’s chatter of another Yard Sale in the Fall. If you’d like to be on the Committee to help make the Sale bigger and better, or if you’d just like to provide ideas, please contact Community Affairs Chair Rick Landy at [email protected]
