Time Out Market New York — a huge culinary mecca comprising restaurants, bars and food-related “cultural experiences” — has signed a lease for 21,000 square feet on two levels at Dumbo’s booming Empire Stores, The Post has learned.

The Brooklyn complex is modeled on the original Time Out Market in Lisbon, Portugal, which opened in 2014 and drew 3.6 million visitors in 2017. The new edition overlooking Brooklyn Bridge Park and the East River will include 520 seats indoors and outdoors.

The Market is expected to open later this year. It will boast offerings from a “curated” group of 20 eateries yet to be named, as well as three bars and a performance/exhibition stage. Customers will have a choice of counter seating for specific kitchens or communal seating served by grab-and-go stands.

Dekalb Market Hall partnered with Seamless to offer deliveries from eateries inside like Katz’s Deli, Pierogi Boys, Fletcher’s and more.

Brooklynites can now get food from local favorites like Katz’s Delicatessen and Pierogi Boys delivered to their door. Seamless partnered with Downtown Brooklyn’s Dekalb Market Hall to start delivery from 15 of the 40 vendors inside the space on Thursday, a spokesman for Seamless said. Aside from Katz’s and Pierogi Boys, the service will also bring food from Fletcher’s Brooklyn Barbecue, Eight Turn Crepe, Arepa Lady and more. Dekalb Market Hall opened in the ground-floor of the condo development City Point last year bringing outposts of popular spots like Ample Hill Creamery, Steve’s Authentic Key Lime Pie, Nobletree Coffee and more to the neighborhood. The market used to be housed in shipping containers set up on a Willoughby Street lot until they were forced to close in 2012 by their landlords, Eater New York reported. Whisk will take over from the well-loved A Cook’s Companion, which closed this year, and promised to stock many of the same wares.A Williamsburg kitchen shop plans to take over the storefront of the well-loved Atlantic Avenue cookware store that owners shuttered earlier this year. Whisk, which has locations in Williamsburg and Manhattan, will open their third outpost at 197 Atlantic Ave. next month and take over from A Cook’s Companion which closed in February, the Brooklyn Paper reported “We were also fans of A Cook’s Companion and will do our darn best to keep everyone happy with our selections,” owners of Whisk wrote in a note posted on the store’s window. Owners plan to stock many of the same brands as the old storefront and will open up their doors a bit early to fill Soda Stream canisters, which residents missed since the original shop closed, the Brooklyn Paper reported. After nearly 20 years of business, Jennifer Baron closed down A Cook’s Companion to spend more time with her elderly parents, travel and “slow down,” she previously told Patch.

In recent months, there has been a raft of mail being illegally removed from street corner mailboxes in Brooklyn Heights, which has led to stolen identities and bank and credit card accounts being compromised. The NYPD has issued an alert to warn Brooklyn Heights residents that if you are mailing checks, money orders, or tax returns, to protect yourself from mailbox fishing and check fraud by taking these precautions:
Drop mail containing checks inside the post office
When writing checks, use permanent ink that cannot be erased
Check your bank account balance frequently to ensure that the proper amount is debited, and
Call 911 immediately if you see anyone tampering with a street mailbox.
The NYPD is working with the appropriate U.S.P.S. authorities to apprehend the responsible individuals.

The FY 2019 Budget includes design/build legislation for the construction of new jails to replace the Rikers Island Jail Complex, the reconstruction of the Brooklyn Queens Expressway and NYCHA projects. As a result of design/build authorization, the City will avoid significant delays in construction and will realize savings in excess of $1 billion.

New York’s Constitution mandates that a budget be approved by April 1st. Through their respective “one house” bills, the Assembly and Senate each requested that this authorization be in the budget, but significant legislative differences must be overcome for it to be passed as part of the budget.
Senators Martin Golden, Simcha Felder and Andrew Lanza recently added two problematic provisions to Senate bill 7867: 1) the savings realized by Design-Build, an estimated $113 million, be transferred to the MTA’s capital plan, and 2) a mandate that a police officer be assigned to every public and private school within the city throughout the day. They are unlikely to be acceptable to the Assembly.
The BHA’s online petition urging Design-Build authorization has exceeded 1,000 signers from communities throughout Brooklyn. On March 23rd, the BHA sent letters, accompanied by a 91-page list of signers, to Governor Cuomo, Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan, and sponsors of the Senate bill to show widespread support for an unencumbered Design-Build measure.

Some state pols want to fast track work on the deteriorating Brooklyn–Queens Expressway — but only if the city puts armed cops in every school. Republicans in the state Senate proposed a fiscal plan on March 14 — following Gov. Cuomo’s two budget drafts issued in January and February — that allows the city to use the streamlined design-build process in its job to rebuild a 1.5-mile stretch of the three-tiered expressway between Atlantic Avenue and Sands Street, but inextricably ties the authorization to a provision that would require firearm-carrying officers in public learning houses across the five boroughs. But after kids across Kings County walked out of classrooms that same day as part of a nationwide call to reform gun laws following last month’s devastating shooting that claimed 17 lives at a Florida high school, linking the unrelated law to the road’s repair is a slap in the face to students and teachers who don’t want more weapons in safe spaces, a Brooklyn Heights pol said. -The Brooklyn Paper
